Baseball Update

From Coach McClintic:

I'm sorry about the delay on this... With games being played on almost every day of the week, I'll do my best to go into the detail about the contest... But some, like today, will be more brief than others.

South Webster vs Sciotoville East - 3/27/17

On Monday, we had our home opener vs. Sciotoville East and won by a score of 16-3. Trevor started for us on the mound and did a good job... He wasn't awarded the "W" because he didn't get through 3 innings and the decision was given to Caleb Cunningham who entered in the 3rd inning. Brayden Bockway also came in for a relief role as he pitched the 5th.

We were able to jump out to an early 9-1 lead after one, and tacked on 5 more in the bottom of the 2nd.... The early lead made it possible for us to get 20 players into the game in some capacity, so it was good for a lot of our younger guys to get some varsity experience.

South Webster @ Wellston - 3/28/17

We traveled to Wellston on Tuesday evening to play a non-conference game in some soggy conditions. The game started out promising as we took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the 1st... Then it all went downhill from there.. We took one on the chin (to say the least) and fell 12-2. No excuses, Wellston can really hit the ball and we found that out the hard way. We also didn't field the ball well at all, so that obviously made matter worse. Alek was on the mound for us and he did what we asked of him... He threw strikes, but they had him figured out early and often. Alek is our catcher (and a great one at that) and was on the mound for only the 3rd time in his career. Our pitching rotation is going to be an "all hands on deck" approach this season, and it will certainly take us some time to get this figured out. We'll be using plenty of guys and we hope to have more "pitchers" than "throwers" towards the end of the season.

South Webster vs. Wheelersburg - 3/29/17

We lost 10-3 to Wheelersburg on Wednesday evening at home. Brad Gee pitched a GREAT game in the loss. He didn't surrender an Earned Run until the 5th inning (his only ER of the game), and he was spectacular the entire time he was out there. I told him it was possibly the best I've ever seen him on the mound in my 4 years as his coach... Because anyone who has pitched knows how hard it is to keep your composure when mistakes are made, and that's exactly what he did. Anytime you give a varsity baseball team 6 extra outs in a ballgame (from 6 errors), you're going to have a hard time overcoming that to win the game... But when you give Wheelersburg 6 extra outs, you have virtually no chance to win the ballgame. We relieved Brad of his duties after 5 innings of work, and in the 6th inning we hit a batter and walked two to load the bases for Wheelersburg... and of course a Grand Slam ensued to cap off a disappointing night for our team. We scored 3 runs in the last two innings, but it was too late to mount a comeback.

We play at Wheelersburg this evening (most likely will be postponed).
